Roots and resilience

Walter married Sam Baum in 1986; they welcomed Jordan (1987) and Delia (1991) before divorcing in 1999 after Baum came out as gay. The pair remain friends and co-parents. Walter later had twins, Spencer and Simon, with her second husband. In 2025 she told PEOPLE that being a mother of four helped shape her work on Abbott Elementary.
