It wasn’t the family’s first viral awkward moment. In 2018, as they left Palma’s cathedral after Easter mass, footage showed Queen Letizia appearing to remove Queen Sofia’s hand from Princess Leonor’s shoulder, a tense exchange filmed and reported widely (JAIME REINA/AFP via Getty).

Busy summer and new duties

The Mallorca visit came after a summer trip to the United States to watch Spain win the 2026 World Cup and a Madrid reception for the team. Princess Leonor finished three years of military training — even qualifying as a paratrooper — and will begin a political science degree at Charles III University in September; Princess Sofia completed her International Baccalaureate in May.
