Records that still stand

By the time he retired in 1999, Gretzky held dozens of NHL records, including the most career assists. He won the Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player eight seasons in a row. The NHL retired his number 99 for all teams, a unique honour in the league.

Life after the game

After his playing career, Gretzky worked as a coach and team executive and later as a television analyst. He and his wife Janet, an actress he met in the 1980s, have five children.
